Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

John Rice JONES "I"

1.  It appears that this John Rice Jones "I" was  married to Mary Barger with at least the three children listed;  John Rice Jones  "II", August Jones, & George Wallace Jones and most likely the other five since there was such a large range of dates of the three mentioned above.

2.  But, Clinton Swalley, gggggrandson of John Rice Jones believes that his John Rice Jones had two wives of which the first was to Mary Eliza Powell on January 8, 1781 in Phildelphia, PA.  They had four children:
            (a)  John Jones b. 10 Feb 1783 at Brecon, Wales
            (b)  Marie Jones b. 21 Mar 1784 at Brecon, Wales
           (c)  Myres Fisher Jones b. 11 Mar 1787 at Philadelphia, PA.  d. Apr 1787 at Philadelphia, PA.
            (d) Rice Jones b. 18 Sep 1791 in Brecon Wales  d. 7 Dec 1808 at Kaskaskia, Indiana Territory.
Then he states that the second  was to Mary Barger  b. 17 May 1767 at Pittsburg, PA and died 6 Jan 1839 at Potosi, Missouri, [AKA Mary Baeryer or Mary Barrier] on 11 Feb 1791 at Vincennes, North West Territory and had eight (8)  children including the ones listed here.   Note:  Wide range of dates.

A John  Rice Jones remained in the UK long enough to get a Law Degree at Oxford....he was a Lawyer, co-owned a lead mine with Moses Austin.  He was son of John Jones b. 2 Mar 1732 in North Wales, d. 21 Feb 1801 at New Town, Montgomeryshire, North Wales.  John married Ann Williams b. 27 Jul 1732 at Londonderry, Carmarthenshire and died 8 Apr 1799 at New Town Montgomeryshire, North Wales.  on 15 Oct 1753 at St. George's Church, Hanover Square, London.

    He has no known silblings.

He came to America in 1784 and landed at Philadelphia, where eventually he met his future wife, Mary Baeryer, but later changed to Barger.

3.  Jones, John Rice (d. 1824) of Washington County, Mo. Father of John Rice Jones (1792-1845) and George Wallace Jones;  grandfather of John Rice Homer Scott.  Born in Wales.  Lawyer:  Indiana territory attorney general;  member of Missouri territorial legislature, 1814;  delegate to Missouri state constitutional convention from Washington County, 1820;  justice of Missouri state supreme court, 1820-24;  died in office 1824.  Died in St. Louis, Mo., February 1, 1824.  Bural location unknown.

4.  Earl L. Jones does not believe the Honorable John Rice Jones in paragraph two belongs in this family [John Jones "V"],.....although there are similar dates of births, some similar named offspring, & etc.   I will leave the material posted so that maybe someone with positive proof will inform us.  An unanswered serious question....why would a prominent Philadelphia Lawyer, Statesman, and Businessman leave there to tackle the wilds of Indiana Territory?

5.  It is a known fact that Thomas E. Jones, "Sr" with his wife and family left South Carolina, wound up in Christian County, Kentucky.  They later migrated to Edgar County, Illinois. [Land grab like the Oklahoma Sooner State]  No doubt there were other members of the Jones family who went with them and most likely included his older brother John Rice Jones "I" who may have settled in Missouri after having been in Illinois where he married Mary Barger in Randolph County, Illinois.
