1. Obituary: Garry B. Gilliam, 48
Garry Brown Gilliam, 48, of Hendersonville, died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Pardee Hospital after a sudden illness.
He was the son of the late Brownlow B. Gilliam and Evelyn A. Stepp Gilliam and a lifelong resident of Henderson County. He worked at Berkley Mills for 10 years and was well-known in the community as the owner and operator of Garry's Produce for 17 years. He was also the co-owner and operator of Gilliam Grading with his son.
He was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Katie Mae Gilliam of Edneyville; one son, Garry Shawn Gilliam of Mountain Home; two daughters, Sandra Nicole Johnson and her husband, Dave, of Edneyville, and Mary Melinda Johnson and her husband, Paul, of Hendersonville; one sister, Barbara Rowe and her husband, David, of Columbus; five grandchildren, Ashley Marie Gilliam, Shawna Elaine Gilliam, David Alexander Johnson, Tyler Bryson Johnson, and Braden Shawn Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Locust Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Blackwell officiating. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors.

Elma D. Higgins, 77, 483 E. Sixth St., died at 6 a.m. Thursday Dec. 5, 1996, at her residence. She formerly lived at 715 Apache Drive.
She was born on Feb 4, 1919 in Burgaw, N.C. to Walter R. and Victoria Batson Jordan. She first married William L. McMinn, Sr., in 1940, and he is deceased. She married Robert E. Higgins in 1962, and he died Jan 1, 1976.
Mrs. Higgins was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, Peru. She retired from Southern Bell Telephone in 1966.
Survivors include two sons: William L. McMinn, Jr., Peru, and Michael J. McMinn, Peru; three daughters; Juli A. Childress, Peru; Victoria E. Richardson, Peru; Rhonda D. Allen, Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters; Elease Player, Jacksonville, Fla.,m and Lela Gaines, Richmond, Va.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Church of the Nazarene, 331 W. Sixth St., with pastor Ron Shaner officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third St., which is handling the arrangements.
