1.  It looks like the middle initial "G" was inadvertantly picked up over the years, since, Martin was a "Jr" of Martin Jarrell Hayes, Sr.

2.  Martin & Narcissus were married by:  J. S. Hendricks.  License recored in Panola County, Texas.  The names given were "Hays" and "Narcissa Balew".

Martin Jarrell HAYES "Sr"

1.  Martin Jarrel Hayes was born in Ireland in 1827, migrated to Freeport, Illinois as a young man, came to Texas in 1869, and was buried in Mt. Bethel Cemetery located in Panola County, Texas.

2.  Glenda, daughter of Gladys, daughter of Robert Henry Hayes said that her mother told her other children that left Illinois with Martin and JoAnna on their trip to Texas....when the boat landed in Shreveport, Louisiana, the other children went with different family members.  Robert suspected the other children were somewhere around Center, Texas.  He went to Center and talked to some of the Hayes, but, none of them seemed to know anything about Martin or the trip down the Mississippi River.

3.  The 1870 Panola County, Texas, Census lists Martin Hayes, 45, male, white, working on a farm, born in Ireland with 2 children:  1.  Mary, daughter, 17, white, female, keeping house.  2.  Martin, Jr. 12, male, white, going to school.

4.  Glenda reports that this information came from a book on Panola County, Texas families and is included in the "L. B. Belew" family history.  Mary Anna Hayes married L. B. Belew.

5.  Glenda thinks Martin Hayes, Sr. was married twice, but, that is not proven.
