1. Removed early to Nashville, Tennessee and then to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he became an eminent physician.
1. At the age of 17 he bacame a druggist's clerk, the next year (1838) a druggist; in 1840 began the study of law, admitted to the Bar in 1842; practiced at Mt. Vermon, Ohio; Carmi, Illinois, and in 1850 removed to Chicago, where he resided (last at 437 Carroll Avenue) till his death; in 1847 raised a company of volunteers for the Mexican War; in 1848 (age 28) chosen Presidential Elector for Illinois, and member of the State Legislature, and appointed Governor's Aid, with the rank of Colonel of Cavalry; in 1850 City Solicitor of Chicago, Comptroller 1862-5, and 1873-6; U. S. Revenue Commissioneer.
