Heston and his brother Juston took an interest in cattle in grade school.  At the age of 12, he exhibited his first 4-H Club steer.  This project was the beginning of an interest that provided Heston with a college education and a lifelong career, which he loved and was devoted to.  In FFA, Heston earned his Texas Lone Star Farmer Award and was a member of the State Livestock Judging Team.  His next working with the college beef herd and in feeding and exhibiting A&M show cattle.  He was a graduate of the 1942-43 "Company "A" class.  Following graduation and before going overseas for duty in the Army, Heston was married to Jean Wilson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wilson of Sidney, Texas, on March 4, 1944.

He served his country in 1945-46 in active duty as a first lieutenant with Combat Engineers stationed in the European Theater with the 333rd Combat Regiment.  When his tour of duty ended, he became a captain in the reserves and again took up his interest in cattle on a ranch he and his wife purchased in Blanket, Texas, in Brown County.  There, their four children were born.  He also had a ranching operation in Llano County, Texas, from the early 1960s until 1999 when, after Jean McBride's death, he returned to Brown County.  After his return to Blanket, he was fortunate to meet and marry Carmen Pearson Sept. 10, 1999, with whom he enjoyed traveling, gardening and antiquing for the last six years of his life.
