Rev. Ernest Lewis HAZELIUS

1.  Rev. Ernest Lewis Hazelius was descendant on the paternal side from a long and honored line of Lutheran ministers.  His mother was a schoolmate and intimate friend of Catherine II of Russia, who showed marked favors to the son of her friend when she became Queen.   At his birth she wished to adopt him, but his parents left the offer to his own decision when he should be old enough to judge for himself.  He declined her proposal.  He was very highly educated.  In 1800 he first went as Professor of Languages to Nazareth, Pennsylvania.  In 1815 he was made Professsor of Theology at Hartwich Seminary, Coopersttown, New York.  He was afterwards at Gettysburg, and his last position was as the Presiden of Colombia College, South Carolina.  (See:  Hartwick Seminary Memorial)

2.  He emigrated to the United States in 1800.

1.  John & Jane had 2 daughters named Eleanor...and 2 daughters named Hannah...the first of each died at an early age.
